News of ISI chief’s visit to Dhaka is fake: Chief Advisor’s Press Wing

A spokesperson for the Bangladesh Defense Ministry has said that the news of the visit of Lieutenant General Asim Malik, the head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), to Dhaka is fake.

This was stated in a post on the verified Facebook page of the chief adviser’s press wing Fact.

The post said that a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Defense Ministry said that the news published in various media and social media that the ISI chief had visited Bangladesh is not true.

Earlier, various Indian media outlets had reported the news of Asim Malik’s visit to Dhaka. Citing allegedly reliable sources, the Economic Times report mentioned that the main purpose of Malik’s visit to Bangladesh was to create a network for information exchange between the intelligence agencies of Bangladesh and Pakistan. However, New Delhi has alleged that the visit could increase subversive activities on the Bangladesh-India border, which could cause instability in India.

General Malik arrived in Dhaka via Dubai last Tuesday. He was welcomed by Lieutenant General Mohammad Faizur Rahman, Quarter Master General (QMG) of the Bangladesh Army.

Although relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have been historically cold, relations between the two countries have improved somewhat after the recent fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government through student-public movements. Analysts say that the growing anti-India sentiment in both countries has played a role in improving these relations.

Security challenges and bilateral military cooperation were discussed in the meeting, according to Pakistan’s ISPR.

In that meeting, the two generals emphasized building a ‘strong defense relationship’. They said it was important to protect the partnership between Pakistan and Bangladesh from external influences. The statement did not mention India directly.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif met Bangladesh’s interim government head Mohammad Yunus at the D-8 summit of developing countries in Cairo, Egypt, in December. The two leaders had previously met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
